Ravelry New Policy: Do Not Post In Support of Trump or his Administration

This is a knitting and crocheting website where members sell patterns.

Would it not have been better as part of the rules to sign up for the site to have no political discussion or politically oriented patterns? Another site I was on linked some strongly worded anti-Trump patterns on Ravelry. I wonder if they're going to give those a winky-wink thumbs up?

Comments:
I wrote a silly post about this earlier this morning. "Knit One, Hurl Two".

The website owner's Twitter page is definitely leftist and she is having a hard time keeping the pro-Trump posts deleted. The role-playing website RPG.net enacted a similar policy last October. Since knitting and games such Dungeons and Dragons do not interest me, I do not know how true both site's claims are about being overwhelmed with racist/bigoted/homophobic/White Supremacy/(insert your own pejorative here) posts were, but I have a hard time believing that anyone would suddenly and out-of-the-blue insert "MAGA" or "Trump 2020" into a thread about fabric or the best brand of yarn to use. I also doubt there were many RPG players who would do the same; when I hear the trite old accusation "living in mom's basement", those are the types I think of first.

I'd think that, if there were pro-Trump sentiments being posted, it was most likely in reply to someone posting adoring BS about any one of the cabal of Commie clown car candidates from the left.

Like you say, it appears they're only banning pro-Trump comments or sentiment. What I find ironic is how conservatives are more pro free speech than are the leftists....which would make US more liberal than they are and also make them the true Fascists and bigots.

Let them have their echo chamber, though...if they lose enough participation and memberships from conservatives, they'll rue the day when they find their website rankings being overtaken by a similar but all-inclusive website.
Thanks Mike. I just read your very funny post. I had a casual membership to that site which I promptly deleted after reading about their actions.

Quote from article: "We cannot provide a space that is inclusive of all and also allow support for open white supremacy. Support of the Trump administration is undeniably support for white supremacy."

My opinion based on logic is simple rules "no politics" in their terms of membership should have been sufficient and fair to all. Derogatory characterizations appear much like an attempt at character assassination rather than a no politics policy based on fairness to all.

Oh well there are many books both in print and kindle which are quite sufficient.
You're exactly right. While I've never had a "real" website (maybe technically, just for a minute or two when I registered my website name but still used the Blogger platform) I did have and manage several different MSN Groups and generally had a "No politics" policy.

I would have liked to have seen just what prompted that action and to what extent. I find it hard to believe that a bunch of (mostly) women knitters would have - for no reason - brought up their "racism". I suspect they were isolated incidents and as I said, probably in response to some slam against Trump. I don't know how heated the argument got, but trust me...I've seen worse fights on recipe sites, whether goulash should be called "Hungarian" not using the proper paprika, how anyone has no taste buds if they don't like their steaks to the rarer side of medium-rare and of course, if it's "real chili" if it has beans in it. (oh, and sugar in corn bread? Yes or No? THAT showed the actual divide in this country, yes for sugar in the North and "Idiot Yankees!" comments from the Southern states. The beans in chili thing was mostly Texans against the world...I don't like beans in my chili but I like chili in my beans, go figger.)

I remembered something I read in a message board a few days ago; the discussion was all about how Trump was a racist and white supremacist b/c he had not denounced David Duke.   Ron Paul went through the same type of accusations after it was found his campaign had taken some donations from a white supremacist group. He explained that he certainly did not agree with their philosophy, but if he took their money, he would use it to try to get elected and do some good for the country. I think he finally returned the money only to shut the whiners up.

Wish I had learned how to knit; after my ex and I split - she got the Kirby, I got the cats - I finally broke down a year later and bought a vacuum and after running the sweeper for the first time, if I'd had the innards, I could have knitted another couple of cats.
Thanks Mike. Wasn't it Rosie Greer who either knits or crochets because it helps him relax? I think other men do also. My algebra teacher taught me the basics of 'cast on' to get started. If you decide to teach yourself go to a large thrift store for knitting needles and yarn.
