Firefox 3 Beta 4 Rocks

WOW is all I can say after using the new beta of Firefox 3.

That comment is directed at:

  • Performance (INCREDIBLE performance)
  • User interface
  • Did I say performance?

This is absolutely the fastest web browser I've ever used.  It's got to be twice as fast as Firefox 2 and faster than IE (by far), Opera, and Safari.

I'm sure performance will vary by how powerful your PC is, but no matter what, you should experience similar proportional speed-ups to what I'm describing.

However, there are still bugs.  Things don't finish loading on some pages, there are horizontal scroll bars on some pages (meaning that it is rendering some things in the wrong place), and other miscellaneous glitches.  But the future looks bright for Firefox!

  • Good news. Thanks for keeping us posted Todd. Can't wait for it to become stable. Is it available only to developers for testing?

  • After that endorsement I may give it whirl. I've noticed lately on all my webmail initial first page downloads started taking longer times, before they were almost instantaneous.

  • Well, I just put the FF version 2 in and it is definitely faster, than IE 6! I probably should go to IE 7 and see how that goes, IE 6 may need to be laid to rest. Spell check also works on this comment box without having done a thing! Thanks! I have a new browser that is super cool.

  • @jarasan: The built-in spell check is indeed a nice feature of Firefox.

I'd highly recommend that you (and everyone else) have both IE7 and Firefox installed. The number of IE6 users is shrinking daily, and there are definitely more IE7 installations than IE6 at this point. Anyone still using IE6 should use the Windows Update feature to upgrade to IE7 for free. (Windows 98 and ME users cannot upgrade, but then again, they should really get off those antiquated operating systems anyway. They are really horrible compared to XP and Vista.)

So even though you may find that Firefox works just great, I would still strongly recommend upgrading your PC to IE7 as well. IE6 has many glitches and holes that make it something you should get away from if possible. (IE 5 and 5.5 are much worse, but that's another story.)

BTW, on the issue of spell check, you can also spell check a regular text field using IE6/7. Just click the spell check button in the Lottery Post editor to download and install IESpell. After you install it, you can right-click any text field to spell check it.

  • Can you help me out? When I sign onto LP I am "justxploring." I logged off and closed my browser. When I used Firefox, I got the log in screen and typeed my password but I'm still a Guest, even though it was accepted. I had that same problem with Netscape. I am using Firefox 2.0.0.12
    Thanks

  • Yes Firefox 3 Beta 4 is fantastic, everything you said! A few of my add-ons aren't updated for it but the most important one, Forecast Fox Enhanced does so very happy camper ... love the ability to see a quick regional radar shot with mouse over.

Also downloaded Maxthon2 browser and it is also fantastic! Thanks for the recommendation!

  • It sounds wonderful, but I think I'll wait for it to became stable before I upgrade.
