They keep calling AR-15 assault rifles, First of all AR Stands for ArmaLite, My Ruger .22 also has a 15 round clip and is semi automatic. I have no idea why AR 15's are the weapon of choice for the crazies.

Any weapon used to hurt another is an assault weapon, gun, hammer, knife, crow bar etc.
Fact, more people are stabbed every year then those who are shot.
