The Los Angeles police department (LAPD) has confirmed it will start an internal investigation after a picture of a battered and bruised Rihanna was leaked online.

As previously reported, TMZ.com somehow obtained a photograph of the “Umbrella” singer after her alleged attack by Chris Brown. (Pictured right)

"The Los Angeles Police Department takes seriously its duty to maintain the confidentiality of victims of domestic violence," the LAPD said in a statement on Thursday (February 19).

"A violation of this type is considered serious misconduct, with penalties up to and including termination."

Brown, 20, was arrested on a charge of making criminal threats on February 8th after an altercation with an unnamed woman, believed to be Rihanna, in Los Angeles.

Brown has since issued a statement saying he is "sorry and saddened" by the incident. The “Forever” star also stated he’s seeking counseling from his church pastor.

Although Rihanna told police this incident wasn't the first time Brown had been physically abusive towards her, according to the police source, "she may have thrown the first punch" on this occasion.

Comments:
I don't follow the celebrity gossip and I don't know if this photo is genuine. However, in any case of domestic violence, the attacker (male or female) needs to be prosecuted for assault. I hate the words "domestic violence" because it reduces the severity of the crime as if it's something private between a man & a woman. If someone who beats his wife went to the supermarket and punched a stranger, he would be arrested for assault. Being married or dating a violent person doesn't make you any less of a victim. Personally, it's something I can't relate to, since I'd castrate any man who raised his hand to me, but this needs to STOP.
@justx

Looking at that picture and assuming that is a true picture of the victim, he should be in jail. There is no doubt that this is a true case of assault/battery.   But then again, if she says she threw the first punch? Chris Brown was charged with a misdemeanor.

I also agree that it should simply fall under the "normal" charge of assault/battery and doesn't need a category or new law of its own.

The problem I have with domestic violence is that cops arrest when there is no real harm - unlike this case. You throw your own telephone - don't hit anyone and they arrest you. A red mark that needs a magnifying glass to see and they arrest you. THAT is gross injustice and a waste of taxpayer money, Judges, etc;
"Cops arrest when there is no real harm."
On what planet, True Critic?   Maybe things have changed dramatically, but in 1997 I let a man I knew stay with me after he lost his job & got evicted. I told him he could sleep on my couch for a short time until he found a room somewhere and he could pay me back when he got another job. (I fed him too) He said he had a buddy who was out of town, but he'd be back in a few days. Story is too long, but the Reader's Digest version is this. (Keep in mind he didn't live here or pay rent. I was just being nice.) This man turned out to be a substance abuser with a long police record. He had been in jail many times for petty crimes, DUI and assaulting a police officer. He had also a long record of domestic abuse. Even after a month he wouldn't leave. The cops said I had to go through the legal system to evict him. I thought I was living in The Twilight Zone. After all, he didn't live here! (I just want to make sure you heard me the first time.) Yet I was told that, because I had invited him into my home, if I threw out his clothes HE could sue ME. He broke in one night after I changed the lock and the police said they couldn't do anything because I wasn't hurt. They used the words "domestic situation." I explained that the man was not my boyfriend or husband, but it didn't matter. I also explained he didn't live here. (just in case I didn't make that clear) The landlord came over to help, but the cops said we shouldn't have changed the locks (she helped me) since he was staying here. She explained that I was her tenant and he didn't live here (did I say that?) but they said it didn't matter. His sister told me he had gone to jail for getting drunk & breaking a woman's arm. She sent me the police report from PA, I showed it to the local police, and they said they couldn't take any of that into consideration since I hadn't been injured.   I finally got angry & frustrated enough to take care of the situation my way.
It's going to be interesting to see what route she takes with this being a celebrity.

According to the police source, "she may have thrown the first punch" on this occasion.
All I can say is want some bring some. If you hit, expect to get hit back. What is he supposed to do just let her hit on him and do nothing? I don't think so.

The same for her. If he has been hitting on her she should've went up side his head with a baseball bat, golf club, beer bottle, brick, iron skillet, metal pipe, large wrench, piece of wood, tire iron, whatever she could get her hands on. Then leave him and his mess alone. A person do only what you allow them to do to you.

You got the guts to whip my a** in a relationship, then I got the guts to send you to the burn unit at the local hospital and send you a get well card full of itching powder. (no joke) Some folks thrive on drama, I'm not one of them.

I teach my girls and my boys not to allow anyone to abuse them. Not male or female. I also teach my kids to keep their body parts to themselves.

As with any story there is more to this story, and the meat of it may never make it to press.
Remember when it wasn't really an illegal act to beat your wife?
