On securing the border

I was reading the news about President Obama's recent speech on immigration.  The news article started off as follows:

WASHINGTON — Hoping to breathe new life into the stalled immigration effort, President Barack Obama on Thursday blamed the delay on recalcitrant Republicans whom he said had given in to the "pressures of partisanship and election-year politics."

Republicans responded that Obama's first step going forward must be to secure the border.

In his first immigration speech, Obama took Republicans to task, in particular 11 GOP senators who had backed attempts during the previous Republican administration to tighten the immigration system. He did not call out anyone by name.

Obama dismissed the focus on a "border security first" approach, saying the system is too big to be fixed "only with fences and border patrols." He advocated a comprehensive approach that would call on the government, businesses and illegal immigrants themselves to live up to their responsibilities within the law.

I would actually agree with President Obama:  fences and border patrols CANNOT entirely fix the problem of illegal immigration.  Some of the other things he mentioned, such as penalizing employers who hire illegal aliens, must also be done.

The problem I am having here is that EVERYONE agrees that securing the borders will have SOME kind of affect on the problem.  Most studies have shown that secure fences cut down illegal immigration 90-95%.  But, for argument's sake, let's say it cuts down the problem only 50%.

If everyone agrees that securing the border must be included in any immigration reform, and if doing so will cut down illegal immigration by AT LEAST 50% (probably 90-95%), then why in the world aren't we doing it RIGHT NOW?!

That's what leads me to believe that President Obama is only playing politics with the issue.  If he really wanted to protect the country from illegal aliens and the illegal drug trade coming over the border, wouldn't he at least do the one thing that everyone agrees on, and which everyone agrees will cut down the problem to some extent?

  • He's going to give them amnesty as fast as he can.
    New votes for November.
This year has been a year of stabbing us in the back, I never would have thought our leaders would run to other countries and bad mouth us,or worse give someone a standing ovation for complaining about us.
They have made it clear ! social reform is their agenda.

  • We need to pull the military from the foreign countries and let them secure our borders - now!

  • I don't have the specific quote but Obama said to the effect if he secures the border first then there is no incentive for Republicans to cooperate on immigration "reform" (amnesty by any other name). We the people are being held hostage to an administration which is proving itself to be incompetent on all vital issues every day it is in power.

  • My comment above came from a video JAP69 posted on his blog. Finally remembered where the info came from.
