Madman since your question is directed at me I will answer it for you. First of all, I was sent to Southeast Asia in 1970, I was there for 18 months. Eisenhower authorized "unarmed" military advisers to South Vietnam. Kennedy greatly expanded the numbers, authorized them to bear arms and lead Vietnam forces, and to return fire if fired on. I returned fire at anyone and anything that fired upon me and my comrades. Johnson sent US forces operating independently of Vietnam forces. This was an escalation for which all bear responsibility. Nixon continued the bombing, but it was met with major protests back in the world. There is a lot more I can say about Vietnam, but there are some things it took years to forget.
