Still running Windows 8? Time to upgrade, or else

I see from the Lottery Post web stats that many people are still running Windows 8 on their computers.  If you're one of these people, you really need to do the free upgrade to Windows 10.

Here is the link to an article that came out today describing WHY it is so important to upgrade:  http://www.zdnet.com/article/still-running-windows-8-time-to-upgrade-or-else/

You should leave yourself about an hour to do the free upgrade.  When you're ready, go to the following link and get started:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

  • I'm running on Windows 7. I've tried a few times to upgrade to 10 but after a few seconds, it goes away with no explanation. I bought Windows 7 on a CD many years ago so i could install a new version if my computer's registry became too corrupt. I guess it's obsolete now. It cost me 120 bucks for it at the time, and I only used it once.

I'll try your link and see if it works, thanks.

  • Still no luck. After I click "RUN", nothing happens. Oh well.

  • Are you sure that your Windows 7 installation is completely updated with all the latest patches? If you're not sure, run Windows Update, install every update available, and then when it's done run it again -- and keep repeating that process until there are no more updates to install. Then try upgrading again.

  • Thanks Todd, will try this, but I have my computer set for automatic updates at 3 AM if available, I just checked after reading your reply and it says that it's still on automatic. I checked for updates anyways, and it says no updates available, yet there are 10 optional updates available. I doubt those are very important but will update anyways.

    Thanks.

  • I upgraded to windows 10 in late October. No problems till I did a registry scan with PC Doctor in order to clean my hard drive. OMG !! Never had a problem with it doing windows 7 but it totally messed up windows 10. Just to let everyone know that just be careful with what utility clean up software programs they have loaded on their computers. Windows 10 my not like it.

  • Read the articles, carefully.   PC clean up utilities are dangerous as they are not dynamically updated as far as what is and what isn't legit on a registry entry.   Most of those utilities are not what they say they are.   Microsoft Windows 10 has a very complex hierarchy for file ownership and has included virus and malware protection with Windows Defender no need for virus progs scanners etc..   If you ever get pop up's in the middle of your computer screen warning about malware etc. never click them or call an 8xx number, press Alt -F4 or close your browser....free tech advice.

The service pack for Win 10 is Win 10 pro., the Win 10 Pro driver library doesn't include some older devices etc..

  • Jarasan, totally agree on the registry cleaners.

Reddog, long ago, in the Windows Vista days, I used a registry cleaner to fix some problems I was having. At the time it did the trick for me, so I even recommended using it for a time. Until I stopped recommending it, because it can royally screw up your computer.

Now, I totally recommend AGAINST using a registry cleaner. I will never do it again myself. Better to do a clean install of the OS (even with all the hassle of re-installing all your software) than it is to mess up the registry.

  • I upgraded to Windows 10 back in October. I had a Registry Cleaner called "Speed Fix Tool Pro" installed at the time running Windows 7. This program installed on Windows 10 and I have used it to clean the registry multiple times with no problems whatsoever so far. Will continue using it, and will report if there ever is a problem with the program.

  • It worked ! Thanks Todd.

Half way through I realized all my data could possibly be erased, but the files were still there. Yay !

Btw, those 10 seemingly inconsequential "Option Updates" I never updated turned out to be the solution.

Thanks Todd for your help, I like the new outlay. I even have a new friend named Cortana.

  • Wow !..lightning fast as heck too. Jumping from one thing to another in a flash. I don't miss the slight lag.

  • That's so awesome amber! Windows 10 has lots of great stuff, now you get access to the Windows App Store too. (including the Lottery Places app!)

  • After reading your blog, I finally took the plunge and upgraded, and am glad I did. Windows 10 is simply amazing. I resisted for a long while because of other people's stories of "problems" with Windows 10. I'm happy to say that I haven't had a single problem. In fact, my system hasn't been this smooth since I bought it. Thanks again.

  • Great to hear SWMcCaig! I agree about all the junk on the Internet about Windows 10. I'm loving it myself.
